Over the years, I have witnessed people of my generation and the younger generation to come, accepting what was once regarded as inappropriate and disgusting, as now something acceptable and beautiful. Hollywood has produced numerous movies that contain scenes and images that can be described as semi-pornographic. Recently the media has been talking about the movie ‘Fifty shades of Grey’, a film which contains “strong sex and nudity”. Others describe it as a movie of sexual bondage and discipline, based on E. L. James erotic trilogy novel ‘Fifty Shades of Grey, published in 2011. According to the BBC news, the movie holds the top spot in the North American box office, receiving an estimate of $23.3 m.
When a movie like this becomes a success in the box office, should we assume that it will influence the daily thinking and behavior of young adults who watch it? Well, the answer would be yes. It was not long ago, after the movie was released in public, that I read this article from the Independent.com saying the following: ‘University student charged with rape claimed he was re-enacting Fifty Shades of Grey film’ on the 24th of February 2015. According to the report, a university student sexually assaulted a fellow student, as he “reportedly told police he and the woman were re-enacting a scenes from the Fifty Shades film”. Hossain was charged with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault. It saddens me to read this and then see other young people, who are unaware of the consequences of allowing such a deadly influence to enter into their lives, how it can destroy their childhood, their education and understanding of what sex our sexuality and marriage is really all about. Has the next generation, as well as our generation, began to treat men and women as sexual object’s, only for the sake of pleasure? Sad to say, that this is not something new, but it is beginning to be more and more acceptable. This ought to make us concern on how responsible adults are, and parents, who are around young people, who must warn them about the dangers of playing with fire. If this sexual obsessive culture of movies, tv series and tv adverts, video games, animation, language and erotic novels, is teaching young boys that young girls are to be seen as mere objects for their own selfish pleasure, and girls are being encouraged to dress up as ‘hot’ in order to attract other young boys, because it’s ‘cool’, then what you have is a pornified cultural influence. The sexualisation of girls and boys will be destructive, if people encourage and allow it to enter into their lives. But let’s not be concerned about that only. Let’s be concern of those who are acting as responsible adults, how they view this movie, without being disgusted by it? It is a fact that many from my generation have allowed and have given a license to view pornography daily in their personal lives, because this was the only way they learned more about sexuality. Any culture that advocates something this vial as pornography and then encourages men, who have the power to bring it on the ‘Big Screen’, to show it in public, should be in utter shame.
So why is the culture approving it? It should be no surprise that evil as serious as this is approved by company and men in high places, who do it for the sake of pleasure. God’s Word says “they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them” (Romans 1:32). It is true to say that one of the greatest passions of the human heart are three things according to (1 John 2:16), the desire of the flesh, desire of the eyes and pride in possession. And the devil has control over sinners who don’t know God by the reign and power of sexual sin in their lives (Romans 6:14). Their mind, their emotions and their intentions are all based on one motive, to satisfy their lust. Sinners are captives, slaves to sin and allow it to influence and dominate their lives and the lives of other’s and this is one of the reasons why the culture and the public approve it. We have become a sexualized culture. The life-style and behavior of a sexualized culture is approved externally and inwardly in the mind, throwing a billow on people’s conscience, and drowning the sense of shame and guilt so they may as God says “suppress the truth” “in unrighteousness”(Romans 1:18). Our Lord said (John3:19, 20) “people loved the darkness rather than the light because there works were evil. For every one who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed”.
The motive behind these actions, is for the sake of pleasure, particularly, the please their own lust’s. This is known as sexual immorality, to which the root of the word comes from the Greek word pornia which is derived from the word we use pornography. Sexual immorality or pornographia is the practice of it. But lust, strong sexual desire, is the root and the motive of it. This is the reason why human trafficking and the sex slavery exist and are approved by men. This is why thousands of young girls and women and even young boys become victims of sexual abuse and rape and murder. This is why the culture approves sexual immorality. All of this is the result of simply every man and women not being able to control or practice self-discipline over their lustful desires. Notice what the Apostle Paul wrote in (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5) “know how to control” your body, in “holiness and honour”, “not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles (non-Jews) who don’t know God”. When the Apostle talks about knowing or seeing God, he simply is describing a kind of union and relationship that a child has towards His Father, with respect and fear, but also, knowing that his Father’s instruction is for his own good. It is also similar to a relationship between a husband and a wife, both must be faithful and not dishonor one another. But it can also be similar of someone standing before His great King, knowing that if He does not look at his King and behave in honor and respect towards Him, then the person knows and understands the consequences of His actions if he reject’s to honor His King. And so it is with those who are not able to control their lustful desire and who approve these disgusting images and videos to be public on the internet or on the big screen or on a front cover of a magazine. They don’t have a clue what God’s mercy is like. They don’t realize the wrath of God if they do not receive His mercy, they don’t realize the horror of God’s wrath on the judgment day. This is what you ought to be afraid of. Our Lord said on the great Sermon on the Mount “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God”( emphasis added, Matthew 5:8).
Furthermore, there is also another problem with those who don’t know God. They are sinners who belong to Satan. God’s Word says that every human being is born with a corrupted mind. All the intentions of people, who are not born again, are evil, because their goal is to satisfy self. Thus, what we are witnessing today is nothing new, as I wrote earlier. In fact, the Apostle Paul dealt with people who have been influenced by a sexual culture approved in ancient Greece. He warns them that no sexually immoral person will go to heaven (1 Corinthians 6:9). It is also true to say that we must realize that sexual sin is the hardest to stop and get away from any other sin, because it has power over the sinner. Jesus said (John 8:34), “everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.” but, the Lord Jesus Christ also said “the truth will set you free” (John 8:35) if you abide in Him. If you stick around with Him, He will set you free, free from the bondage of sin. Because Jesus Christ was not referring to a simple saying, truth will set you free, but rather, He, who is truth, will set you free, if you repent and believe in what He did for sinners like you and me on Calvary.
We have a corrupt, fallen nature, we are dead in trespasses in sins. Prior to coming to God, we are spiritually dead, our soul is dead to God, and have no power to set ourselves free from the darkness we are in. This is why we need the grace and the mercy of God to intervene in our lives, to work in our hearts, to quicken us, if we come to Him, acknowledging our sins, our fallen state and corrupt nature, humbling ourselves before Him, confessing that we are guilty sinners in need of forgiveness. How can we obtain the forgiveness of sins? It is made available by Almighty God, through grace, through the work of the Eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who came down from heaven, to be our representative, our substitute, our sin-bearer, going to the cross to die the death we ought to have died, to suffer the eternal punishment for our sins that we ought to have suffered, to experience the eternal alienation from God that we ought to have experienced, compressed in those six hours on Calvary’s cross.
If you reader, are reading this, and can identify with any of this, and say to yourself, I am under the control of sin, whether of the specific nature described above, or any other type of sin, then I would plead with you, to go to the Bible, read the Gospels, read the claims and promises of the Lord Jesus Christ, made to sinners like you and me, and prove Him. Go to Him, and in the private place, confess your sins, confess your need, say to Him, I am that sinner, you came to save, ask Him to help you to see your sin, and the weight of your sin, and its effect, and ask Him to make you feel your need of forgiveness, and ask Him to draw near to you, as you draw near to Him, and by humbling yourself before the Lord, the Lord, by His grace will work in your life, as He has worked in my life and in billions of so many down the running centuries. Come to Him, dear friend, for He is able to set you free from this sin, and any type of sin you are in bondage today. He will make you a new person, give you a new heart, and new desires, by the help of the Holy Spirit, He will renew you, and make you a new creature and convert to Himself, never to be the same again.
