The Unity Of God

Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord“ (Deuteronomy 6:4).

What do we mean when we say the ‘Unity of God‘? We mean that God is one. There are no other gods with Him. God is exclusively One and Only.

How can we prove that God is one?

The universe was created by a first cause and so since there is a first cause there is one designer. Since there is one designer there is only One God. If the universe has a beginning from an infinite being that being can only be one. If anything exist now then there must one who has always existed.

How can we prove that God is one according to Scripture?

Isaiah 45:5 God speaks to Isaiah saying “I am the Lord and there is none else, there is no God beside me”. And how does God prove His own Unity? Verse 6 “That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else”. Verse 7 “I form the light, and created darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.”  Since there is one designer in all of creation who governs and Lord’s over time and space and all things, so there must be One God. The Apostle Paul writing to the Corinthians and to the Ephesians wrote “As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one” (1 Corinthians 8:4), “One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:6). The Lord Jesus Christ said “The first of all commandments is, Hear O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord:” quoting from Deuteronomy 6:4.

What is Polytheism and dualism?

Polytheism is the theory that there are many gods. Hindus believe in thousands of gods and the Mormons also believe that god was a created being by another god and he is only one of the many gods of the universe who owns his own planet.

Dualism is the theory that there is good versus evil in the universe. There is not one God, but forces of good and forces of evil. These are the opposing objections against the Unity of God. But God is one and one Lord. Cults like these desire to make people believe they have an inner power which they can activate and control or determine certain things to happen. Like the power of words or the power of positive thinking promoted by the metaphysical cults of the New Age/ New Thought. Most of such teachings are found in the book called ‘The Secret’. But there cannot be many gods or forces because God is first of all infinite and eternal. None has these qualities. God is self-existing and self-sustaining. We however exist because of one sovereign act from one creator. And the only way to know that God is God is the fact that He is a personal Spirit who has communicated to us through His agents (the Prophets) to make the Holy Scriptures the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:15-17). The fact that He Himself states that He alone is One Lord, cannot be denied or disputed. Believing in mere ‘forces’ of good and evil is nonsense to the fact (secondly) that we all have a moral code and moral accountability with each other to answer to crimes and evils in this world. But we ourselves cannot hold to our own standard of morality because we are born evil and are corrupted by it. So how can a moral code that desires to have perfect morality exists unless there is a One and only moral giver who is morally perfect? We cannot reconcile forces of good and evil with the question of our moral code within us which is evident through the conscience, unless there is One self-existing moral being who is utterly perfect. Thus only God is that being. So from within us and outside of us, creation preaches to us that there is but One Lord.

Now that I know this truth, how does this relate to me as a Christian? How can this edify me and sanctify me?

This truth of God’s Attribute is very important because first: it means that since there One God, there is One way and One truth and One religion. Today we have some who teach the doctrine of universalism which teaches that anybody can be saved believe in God even if they are not in the Christian religion. They can be Muslim, Mormon, Catholic, Jewish, Atheist and eventually they will all go to paradise. But this is again another form of pagan mythology and nonsense. If God is one, how can He make all religions leading to Him if all religions don’t agree with each other and all their books contradict each other? No, there can be only One God and One true religion. As the Apostle wrote “One Lord, one faith”(Ephesians 4:5).

Secondly, people who believe in such things, are damned by the truth of the living God as it is written “God hath given them up to strong delusions, to believe a lie, that they may be damned”(2 Thessalonians 2:2). So we are to warn them of their error and plead with them to come to Christ and believe in the One and only Lord.

Third, if there is one God then you must decide to make God your highest priority in life. There are other important subjects to think about in your mind, but none are as higher than God. You can study many books but the chief book to study and master is God’s Word because there is only one personal God.
